Sustainability in the fashion industry: 18 efforts from May 2025

Every month, FashionUnited selects a number of sustainability efforts from the fashion industry, both domestic and international. Today, eighteen efforts from May 2025 are highlighted.

EU-Funded T-REX Project Presents Blueprint for Textile-to-Textile Recycling
After three years of collaboration, the EU-funded T-REX project has completed its mission: developing a blueprint to scale up textile-to-textile recycling (T2T) in Europe. With thirteen partners, including Fashion for Good and Adidas, the project presents concrete insights and recommendations for every step of the recycling chain. The results highlight the importance of technological innovation, collaboration, and policy measures to make textile recycling an economically viable and sustainable system.

Twenty Consumer Watchdogs Send Open Letter to the Fashion and Textile Sector
Twenty national regulators, including the Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), have issued an open letter calling on the fashion and textile sector to be honest and transparent about green claims. The letter was published via the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN).

DePoly SA Raises 20 Million Euros
Swiss recycling company DePoly SA has secured €20 million in funding. Founded in 2020, the company plans to use the additional resources to accelerate the development of its recycling process, which converts PET and polyester waste into new raw materials. DePoly aims to build a more powerful, commercially viable production facility by 2027.

Pyjama Collection from ‘Deadstock’: Lanius Expands Portfolio
This month, Lanius introduced a pyjama collection made from ‘deadstock,’ expanding its product range. The German sustainable brand uses leftover fabric from blouse production of the Spring/Summer 2024 season and launches three nightwear styles. The collection includes a striped pyjama shirt and matching long and short pants.

Polyester Recycling in Europe: Study Reveals Key Factors for a Breakthrough
In May, a study titled The Textile Recycling Breakthrough was released, examining how polyester from old clothing in Europe can be recycled into new textiles. The researchers identified ten key factors necessary to grow polyester recycling. The study also highlights how much more expensive recycled polyester currently is compared to new material, and outlines the policies and investments needed to bridge this gap.

Reju Chooses the Netherlands for First Industrial Textile-to-Textile Recycling Center
Following the opening of the pilot factory ‘Regeneration Hub Zero’ in Frankfurt, Germany last October, textile-to-textile regeneration company Reju has announced its first industrial textile recycling center in the Netherlands. The hub will be located in the Chemelot Industrial Park in Sittard, known as an innovation center. Sittard lies about 28 kilometers north of Maastricht, close to the Belgian border in the west and the German border in the east. “This strategic location enables Reju to leverage existing infrastructure and industrial synergies to efficiently scale up its operations,” the company said.
