Retail sales increased by over 4 percent in April

Retail sales in April increased by 4.2 percent compared to April 2024, reports CBS (Statistics Netherlands). The sales volume was 1.7 percent higher. Non-food sales (including non-store retail) grew by 5.2 percent, while food sector sales (stores selling food and luxury food products) increased by 2.5 percent. Online sales rose by 2.4 percent compared to the previous year.

The sales figures have been adjusted for the composition of shopping days in April. Some days of the week have higher sales than others. Without this correction, retail sales would have been 5.3 percent higher than in April 2024.

Non-food sales over 5 percent higher
In April 2025, non-food sales (including non-store retail) grew by 5.2 percent. The volume (sales adjusted for price changes) was 3.8 percent higher than a year earlier.

Clothing stores, DIY stores (including kitchens and flooring), recreation goods stores, shoe and leather goods stores, drugstores, and furniture and home furnishing stores all recorded higher sales in April compared to April 2024. On the other hand, consumer electronics stores saw a decline in sales in April.

Online sales up more than 2 percent
Online sales were 2.4 percent higher in April compared to April 2024. Webshops (whose main activity is online sales) achieved 7.0 percent growth. However, online sales of stores where internet sales are a secondary activity (multichannel retailers) decreased by 4.0 percent.

The online sales of food stores, drugstores, and other non-food stores were higher in April 2025 than in April 2024. Online sales of consumer electronics stores and clothing stores were lower than a year earlier.
